“Chain of Thought” in AI Writing
One of the #1 mistakes I see people making with AI writing is not providing it proper guard rails.
AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can write blog posts, email sequences, or even entire novels. But the less training and instruction you provide, the more generic the output will be.
How do we fix this?
By understanding the concept of “chain of thought.”
Rather than giving the AI a broad task and letting it run wild, we break it down task by task beforehand and collaborate toward the writing of the content.
Claude just released a new “Projects” feature making this even easier.
💡 Pro Tip: Instead of asking: “Write a newsletter for AI Writing School.”
Try this chain of thought prompt instead (it’s how I launched this exact newsletter):
- Prompt 1: Can you help me brainstorm some newsletter name ideas for [your website or brand]?
…Wait for response…
- Prompt 2: [AIWritingSchool.com] will target [describe your target readers here] who want to [describe the type of content your target audience wants to create]. The newsletter will include a [describe content type here: tips, tutorials, interviews, etc.]
…Wait for response…
- Prompt 3: Let’s discuss how to use it. Can you write [content type you chose in previous prompt] for an issue?
…Wait for response…
- Prompt 4: How would I structure it? Can you put this into a template for me?
This approach often results in more thorough, well-thought-out content that you can then refine to suit your needs.
⚡️Bonus Tip⚡️
Try combining the “ACT AS” technique with chain of thought by asking it to rewrite in the style of your chooses: “Revise this newsletter draft in the style of [Morning Brew].”
Hope you enjoyed this tip! See you next time.

P.S. I just started a new YouTube channel for AIWritingSchool.com 🎥Would mean a ton if you subscribe — I’ll be releasing FREE AI writing tutorials here using Claude and ChatGPT on the regular!
